Who we are
Fryse is made by Shogun Software Limited, Lytchett House, 13 Freeland Park, Wareham Road, Poole, Dorset, BH16 6FA, United Kingdom ("we", "us"). We decide how your personal data is used in Fryse, so under UK data protection law we are its controller. For anything on this page, email support@shogunsoftware.co.uk.
This policy covers the Fryse Android app and the server it talks to. "Your kitchen" means the food, leftovers, recipes and shopping list you keep in the app.
What we collect
Your account
When you sign in with Google or with an email address and password, we receive your name, your email address and a user ID. Passwords are handled by Google Firebase Authentication; we never see them.
Your kitchen and household
The foods you add, with their quantities, where they're stored and when they expire, your leftovers, saved recipes and shopping list. Each household has a name and a list of its members' names. Everyone in your household can see the household's kitchen and its members' names, and invite codes let new people join it.
Photos and text you send to be read
When you photograph a receipt or some food, or paste a list, the photo or text is sent to our server and on to an AI model, which reads it and sends back the foods it found. We don't keep the photo or the text once it has been read. Receipts can show other details, such as the shop and the last digits of a card, so crop out anything you'd rather not send.
The camera is only used when you choose to take one of these photos.
Pictures Fryse makes
Fryse can make an illustration for a food or recipe. These are made by an AI model from the food's or recipe's name alone, and stored and reused for anyone with the same food or recipe. They contain nothing about you.
Fryse Plus
Google Play takes the payment; we never see your card details. Google tells us the subscription you bought, its status and when it renews or ends, and we keep that with your user ID so Plus works for your household. We also count how many receipt scans, photos, recipes and pictures each household uses each month, and record what each AI request cost us.
How the app is used, and when it goes wrong
The app sends us events such as "food added" or "shopping item ticked off", error reports, and diagnostic logs, together with your device model, Android version and app version. These are linked to your user ID, and in PostHog also to your name and email, so we can help you when you report a problem. Crash reports go to Google Firebase Crashlytics and usage events to Google Analytics for Firebase.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, Fryse reminds you about food that's about to expire and before a free trial ends. These are scheduled on your phone.
Why we use it
- To run Fryse for you: your account, your kitchen, sharing it with your household, reading receipts and photos, making recipes and pictures, and Plus. We rely on this being necessary to provide the service you asked for.
- To keep it working and make it better: usage events, error reports, logs and crash reports. This is in our legitimate interest in running a reliable app, and we keep it to what we need.
- To answer you when you contact us, and to tell you about important changes to Fryse or this policy.
- To meet legal obligations, such as keeping purchase records.
We don't use your data for advertising, we don't sell it, and we don't share it with anyone to market to you.
Who helps us run Fryse
These companies process data for us, only to provide their part of the service:
- Google Firebase: sign-in, the database that holds your kitchen and household, crash reports and usage analytics.
- Google Play: subscriptions and payments.
- Hetzner: the server Fryse talks to, in Finland, and its database of subscriptions, monthly usage and AI costs.
- OpenRouter, and the AI model providers it sends requests to (such as OpenAI and Google): reading receipts, photos and lists, and making recipes and pictures.
- Backblaze: storing the pictures Fryse makes, in the United States.
- PostHog: usage events, error reports and app logs.
We may also disclose personal data when the law requires it or a court or public authority validly asks for it, to protect the rights, property or safety of our users, the public or us, or as part of a merger, sale or reorganisation of our business, in which case we'll tell you before your data becomes subject to a different policy.
Where it's stored
We're in the UK, and some of the companies above store or process data in the United States and elsewhere. Where data leaves the UK, we rely on the protections those companies provide, such as the UK–US data bridge or the UK's approved contract terms.
How long we keep it
- Your account, kitchen and household data: for as long as you have an account. Food you delete is deleted, and when you leave a household you're removed from its member list.
- Photos and text you send to be read: not kept once read.
- Subscription and purchase records: as long as the law requires us to keep them.
- Usage events, error reports and logs: only as long as they're useful for running and improving Fryse.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, to send it to you in a portable form, or to stop using it for something you object to. Email support@shogunsoftware.co.uk from the address on your Fryse account. We'll answer within a month.
Deleting your account: email us from your account's address and we'll delete your account and the data tied to it, apart from anything we must keep by law. If you're the last person in a household, its kitchen is deleted too. Cancel Fryse Plus in Google Play first; deleting your account doesn't cancel it.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk. We'd appreciate the chance to put it right first.
Keeping it safe
Data travels between the app, our server and the companies above over encrypted connections, and only the people in your household can read your kitchen. No way of sending or storing data is completely secure, so we can't promise absolute security, but we take care to protect it.
Children
Fryse isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data. If you think a child under 13 has given us personal data, email us and we'll delete it.
Links to other sites
Fryse and this website link to sites we don't run, such as Google Play. Their own privacy policies apply there.
Changes to this policy
When we change this policy we'll update it here and change the date at the top. If a change matters, we'll also tell you in the app before it takes effect.
